Mary Hurst - Montenegrin Stitch

The stitch of the day for Mary Hurst is MONTENEGRIN.

Mary can be stitched with Montenegrin or cross stitch - the choice is yours and there is no wrong or right choice. If you have a go at Montenegrin it will give an added texture and dimension to your sampler but both will be equally as beautiful.

Montenegrin is made up of three stitches than form the basic pattern - an oblique, diagonal and vertical stitch.

Some reproduction samplers are worked over three threads of linen but Mary is worked over two so this is how I have demonstrated the stitch.

This is a diagram I have drawn of Horizontal Montenegrin stitch worked from the left to the right.

This is the stitch from the diagram  stitched out stitch by stitch. The final line in blue floss is cross stitch and you will see it is equally as appealing.

It is important to plan your stitch path before hand. Amy Mitten has written the most amazing little book the "Autopsy of the Montenegrin Stitch". It is spiral bound so can be flipped to any page and it is packed with clear numbered diagrams of every possible direction, twist and turn you will ever need to stitch in.
